Valley of Desolation
There’s no better place to see the drama of the landscape, to learn about its geological evolution or to view the amazing setting of the town, or to watch the sun rise or set over the Plains of Camdeboo than from these extraordinary cliffs and crags. You may also be lucky enough to see the resident pair of black eagles circling at sunset.
Golf
The Graaff-Reinet Golf Club was established in 1897 and has since moved to three different locations. Now nestling in the protective curve of the Sundays River with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the spectacular Spandauskop, lies this hidden gem of the Karoo.
This course is rated among the top ten 9-hole courses in South Africa and is less than a 10-minute drive from the centre of Graaff-Reinet, on the road to Aberdeen.
Visitors are warmly welcomed to enjoy affordable golf in relaxed, tranquil surroundings in the invigorating, healthy Karoo air.
Birding
More than 22 species of birds have been recorded in the region. Expeditions and walks with local experts can be arranged.
The Graaff-Reinet Bird Club was formed in 2001. Over 249 species have been recorded in this area, with about 52 endemic and near endemic species, which is more than in any other natural region.
Bowls
The Graaff-Reinet Bowling Club welcomes visitors.
Lawn bowls is played on grass and variations from green to green are common. Greens come in all shapes and sizes: the most common are fast, slow, big crown, small crown.
Bowls is generally played in a very good spirit, even at the highest professional level, acknowledgment of opponents’ successes and near misses being quite normal.
Guided Wildlife Tours/ Hunting/ Wing Shooting
Hunt exclusively wild birds with Karoo Wingshooting Safaris in South Africa. South Africa is gifted with wild game bird populations of which there are more than fifty bird species. More than twenty of these species are available as fair game for wing shooting in South Africa and are shot regularly. These species include Guineafowl, various Francolin (old-world partridge) species, various Spurfowl (previously referred to as Francolin) species, eight species of Doves and Pigeons, three Sandgrouse species, three Quail species, numerous Duck species as well as the Egyptian and Spurwing geese.
